Understanding our own values is key to building our lives and careers

Careers Education is a lifelong journey and one that requires boys to be prepared to embrace change and lifelong learning; to lean into and continue to build their skillsets.

For many of us, the idea of change can be daunting, so understanding yourself and your values is key to building the life and career that gives you a strong sense of purpose. COVID has impacted our understanding of adaptability and the youth labour market significantly; creating greater volatility and opportunity simultaneously.

Accessing family networks and seeking to explore job types (outside of those boys may already be familiar with) through shadowing and internship opportunities is an important part of building an understanding of the world of work.

Recent employment figures and the Australian Jobs Report from 2022 indicate that boys have a bright future ahead of them if they can embrace change and recognise their own skills, wants, needs and values. In particular, service industries that rely on relationships and people, such as health, are predicted to grow in demand.

Giving boys the opportunity to articulate these issues and prompting careers conversations about their inspirations, strengths and values at home, have been found to be vital in building self-knowledge and a sense of optimism for the future. The Course and Careers Service at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ is here to assist boys as they seek to make choices about their futures.

Questions to initiate a career conversation at any age:Ìý

Skills and strengths

  • What have you always been naturally good at?
  • What are you known for?

Ìý

Values

  • Looking back, what’s always been most important to you?
  • What issues or problems do you feel most strongly about?
  • What are your top three values or things you hold most dear?

Ìý

Interests

  • What do you enjoy learning about most?
  • How would you spend your time if you didn’t have to work/go to school?
  • How do you like to work and learn best?

Reverend Bill Morgan visits ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ College 100 years after his first day at School.

Senior School Assembly

With much trepidation in the air and the presence of Channel 7 News Crew, the Senior School held a very special assembly to welcome back one of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s greatest living treasures, Rev Bill Morgan, who commenced his ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ journey exactly 100 years ago in the Junior School when aged seven.

As he progressed through the Junior and Senior School, along the way:

  • he rowed in the 1933 and 1934 1st Crew
  • in 1934 he was a member of the 1st XVIII football team
  • in 1935 he captained the 1st XV Rugby, 3 years after Rugby started as a sport at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ
  • in 1934 and 1935 he was Captain of Morrison House
  • in 1934 he was a School Prefect
  • in 1935 he was appointed as School Captain

Ìý

He was a member of the OSCA Council from 1936-1950 and he was also ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria and served as Moderator.

Ìý

Bill was accompanied by his son John (‘70), Mr Scott Montgomery, Executive Director of OSCA and current School Captain, Dion Whitfield.

Ìý

School Principal, Dr Scott Marsh warmly welcomed back Bill to his school and after much applause by our awe-struck current students, presented him with a ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Foundation Certificate to recognize the past and current support that he has made to his school.

Junior School Assembly

After lunch in the Junior School’s Ramsay Room, Bill’s next appointment was to attend a special Assembly in the Junior School Assembly Hall. There the boys – from Prep to Year 6 – sat and listened most attentively as the Head of the Junior School, Tom Savill welcomed Bill Morgan as a very special guest.

Ìý

‘How long do you think it is since Bill Morgan started at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ?’ Mr Savill asked the boys. To much laughter, a Prep boy called out, ‘A very, very long time ago!’ A Year 1 boy added: ‘One hundred years!’

Ìý

Mr Savill agreed that it was indeed a very, very long time ago – in fact, he said, it was 100 years to the day since Bill had started at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ.

Ìý

A page from the ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Admissions Register was projected onto the big screen, showing that ‘William Morgan’ began his ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ career on 5 June 1923, and that his attendance record was perfect for at least his first two months at the school.

Ìý

Year 6 boys Ethan So and Angus Murray were ready with some questions. Asked to recall his early days at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, Bill said that most boys in his year had started in February, and as his first day was in June, he felt very much like a new boy.

Ìý

Feeling a little sad, at lunchtime on that first day he wandered down onto the oval where boys were playing ball games. A ball flew through the air nearby and in a reflex action, Bill caught it. An older boy approached him: ‘Get off the ground!’ he said. Bill has never forgotten what came next. Bill’s older brother, John, confronted the first boy: ‘Leave him alone! He has as much right as you do to be on the ground!’ That act of brotherly kindness made him feel much better, and has resonated with Bill over the 100 years since that very first day at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ.

Ìý

Asked who his favourite teacher had been, Bill recalled several teachers’ names and the classrooms in which they taught, but he said, ‘I’m not prepared to name my favourite teacher – I loved them all!’

Ìý

To the question, ‘Did you get into trouble at school?’ Bill replied emphatically, ‘Oh yes!’ He said that the cottage of Bob Horne – ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s Groundsman from 1895 to 1929 – used to be where the school hospital now stands. Bill and another boy had crept under a hedge to pick some apples from a tree in Bob’s garden – but they were caught in the act! Their response was to flee, running down what is now Monash Drive and out into Glenferrie Road, chased by Bob Horne, who caught up with them at the level crossing when the gates closed to allow a train to cross.

Ìý

They were frogmarched back to school, and next day they rather nervously fronted the Headmaster, Mr Waller, fully expecting to be caned for their misdemeanour. Instead, Waller spoke quietly to them about what was wrong with stealing, and taught them the value of honesty. That message has also resonated with Bill over the mists of a century.

Ìý

He encouraged the boys to appreciate the excellent ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ education they were enjoying, and to strive to make ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ a better place that it was when they started.

Ìý

Thanking Bill for his presence at Assembly, Tom Savill said the boys had learned a lot from Bill about the value of responsibility, respect, honesty and trust. The boys applauded Bill, then moved off quietly to their classrooms.

Ìý

All that was now left was for Bill to make his farewells and, supported by his son, John (’69) to make his way home, after a remarkable day commemorating a unique event in ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s history.

During Immersion Week 2023, Year 11 students participating in the ‘Helping Others in Our Community’ Immersion Group had various opportunities to engage in volunteering endeavours.

They participated in a meal-packing activity for the charitable organisation, FORaMEAL. This organisation is dedicated to despatching emergency relief meals to individuals facing hardships in various crisis-stricken regions worldwide. Throughout a full day, the students worked in teams under the guidance and support of dedicated volunteers and achieved the commendable accomplishment of packing 15,100 meals.

Students also engaged in volunteer work at the Red Cross Derrimut Distribution Centre. Their involvement revolved around the task of sorting newly donated clothes. This valuable experience not only contributed to the noble cause of providing aid, but also served as a meaningful platform for raising awareness about the significance of recycling to mitigate wasteful practices.

On the concluding day of Immersion Week, students dedicated their time to volunteer at a Red Cross shop, actively contributing to the shop’s daily operations and functions.

We trust that these hands-on experiences have effectively demonstrated to the students the meaningful impact of volunteering and aiding others. It goes beyond simply understanding the challenges people face during difficult times; it underscores the profound significance of extending a helping hand, as even small gestures can make a significant difference.

¾«¶«Ó°Òµ’s new venture will redefine outdoor education.

¾«¶«Ó°Òµ College is proud to announce the purchase of a new 175-acre outdoor education facility near the picturesque coastal town of Mallacoota. Nestled on the border of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and with direct water access, this new venture promises to redefine outdoor education in a way that’s truly world class.

The property is set to become the epicentre of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ College’s Outdoor Education Program, offering an immersive and transformational experience for Year 9 boys. With plans to house 65-70 students at a time, the program aims to instil a sense of character, environmental stewardship and leadership skills in young minds.

Bordered by the UNESCO-protected Croajingolong National Park, students will be surrounded by an awe-inspiring natural wonderland. The facility’s access to water further enhances the opportunities for activities like kayaking, sailing and marine biology exploration.

¾«¶«Ó°Òµ’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals extends to our Outdoor Education Program. An experienced team of experts, who will be carefully selected for this endeavour, will guide students through a range of activities designed to foster teamwork, leadership and personal growth. From wilderness survival skills to environmental education, our students will be given the tools to truly appreciate and protect the environment. The immersive learning experience will include wildlife monitoring, caring for livestock, ecological studies and a deep understanding of the local ecosystem.

¾«¶«Ó°Òµ is keen to become an integral part of the Mallacoota community. The facility will serve as a hub for students with a focus on community service, fostering a sense of cooperation and shared responsibility for the environment.

While the project is in its early stages, our new facilities on the property will complement the natural surroundings. The design aims to be eco-friendly, ensuring minimal environmental impact and a harmonious coexistence with the biosphere reserve.

This exciting new venture by ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ is not only a testament to the school’s commitment to holistic education but also a milestone in the realm of outdoor education. In the coming years, we look forward to fostering a generation of students who are not only academically excellent but also compassionate stewards of the environment and capable leaders in any endeavour they choose to pursue. This new natural environment in Mallacoota is set to become a canvas upon which these young minds will paint their bright futures.

With the acquisition of this dedicated outdoor education facility in Mallacoota, ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ aims to evolve and grow the boundaries of traditional education. We hope this project will be a testament to the power of experiential learning in fostering well-rounded, responsible and environmentally conscious leaders of tomorrow.

A deep appreciation of the beauty of Tiwi

Harry in Year 11 reflects on his immersion visit to Tiwi College in 2023.

For me, Tiwi was the best school trip I have ever been on. Being with a group of 12 mates and then to be thrown into the Tiwi culture was a camp like no other. To be in and around the communities at Tiwi College and on the Tiwi Islands was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will be forever grateful for having.

The welcoming and hospitable nature of everyone involved in the trip, from the college teachers, students, Tammy and Tippa, and the local communities made us all feel comfortable in the new environment of the islands and ensured a smooth running of the camp.

We were always full of good food and had lots of water whenever we needed it, keeping us energised for the big days of activities. Every day we were trying something new, which made the experience one of a kind. There were no complaints about any of the activities on the camp.

All the activities took us to new levels of understanding of Indigenous heritage and culture that so many people don’t get to experience. We were involved in rituals and visited historic settings where for thousands of years the Tiwi people have lived.

Whether it was walking through local communities on Bathurst Island, being at the local primary school or seeing Indigenous artwork and meeting the artists, fishing on beaches that are so far from urban life, hanging out with the Tiwi College students – it all gave me a deeper appreciation and understanding of what a beautiful place not only Tiwi is and their people are, but Australia is as a whole.

We have been lucky enough to do this trip through ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ with our mates, and this trip has created so many strong memories for those of us in the Indigenous Partnership Program. They are memories that will be with us forever and experiences that we do not get to practice or do in our daily lives. We will now have the privilege of sharing these memories with so many people across our lives.

I am fortunate to have spent this trip with my mates, where our already strong friendships were drawn closer from the new experiences we were enjoying. In becoming closer, our experience on the camp was made even better than anyone could have hoped for. We were all able to make new mates from this camp in the students at Tiwi College, by being around their school life in the week that we were there.

A big thanks goes to ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ and Tiwi College, Mr Glover, Mr Clark, Ms McCowan, Ms Morrison and Mr Butcher for enabling this camp to go ahead.

Year 10 Boys’ Cairns Scuba Trip

As part of the Year 10 Outdoor Activities Program, the annual Scuba Trip to Cairns was undertaken and embraced by a hearty band of Year 10 ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ boys, who had completed all their theory and pool skills development at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, and were on a referral course to complete their Open Water Diving Course.

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) open water diving course requires about 18 hours of theory study and examination, a medical and underwater skill development – not an easy task and a demanding service.

The boys enjoyed 10 dives off the spectacular Great Barrier Reef and completed their Open Water PADI Licence – so they are now licensed to dive anywhere in the world up to 18m. The dives were spectacular and the experience was memorable. Staff accompanying the journey were Mr Riley (Teacher-in-Charge), Mr Jonas and Mr Braidwood.

A Message from the Principal

The congratulations of all in the ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ community go to the young men of the Class of 2023 for such outstanding VCE and ATAR results.

The Class of 2023 concluded their schooling days with style and maturity. Academically, they have now produced a set of results that demonstrate qualities such as perseverance, hard work, determination, and great scholarship. In addition to their efforts on the sporting field, in music, drama or participating in any number of other events and activities, the Class of 2023 have made a significant contribution to their school and the ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Family.

As a genuinely non-selective school, these results reflect a truly remarkable culture of learning at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ. As principal, I am thankful for the professionalism of our teaching and support and operational staff. Thank you for your ethic of care and excellence that you have demonstrated in supporting all boys throughout their final school years.

As the dust settles on today and the many wonderful stories of academic success have been told, always remember that who you are as men, as sons, brothers, and friends, will always ultimately be your measure of true success. With these results behind you, strive to be men of good character who do good in our world.

Congratulations and God bless.

Dr Scott Marsh
Principal
